Felling Trailers has been proudly manufacturing trailers for 50 years. Join us as we take a look back and see how much our company, along with our employees, has grown. Many of you may already be familiar with the story of how Felling Trailers began as a small fabrication shop in downtown Sauk Centre in 1974. Continuing to add to this story, we invite you to read our “Grow with Us Series – 42.” Here, you will meet the people of Felling; we will share a bit about the individuals who have contributed to what our company is today and where we are headed tomorrow. Some people you will meet have been with us for many years, some decades, and others are starting their careers. To continue our series, we would like to introduce you to Rubén Carrillo, Engineering Designer at Felling Trailers, Inc.
Felling Trailers lleva 50 años fabricando remolques con orgullo. Acompáñenos a echar la vista hacia atrás y ver cuanto a crecido nuestra empresa junto con nuestros empleados. Rubén began his career with Felling Trailers in 2018, working in the Finishing department on the night shift. “I installed the decking, lights, and brakes on the trailers,” said Rubén. Being part of the Finishing/Final Assembly team, Rubén learned the final assembly process of many of the trailer models that Felling manufactures. In finishing, assemblers are the last step in the build process of a trailer, following the assembly checklists and drawings. This is where a trailer receives its wiring, lighting, decking, and bolt-on accessories.
Before joining Felling Trailers, Rubén worked in the agricultural industry, on a dairy farm. A little more than a decade ago, Rubén and his wife moved to Minnesota. He is originally from Mexico and completed all his schooling there, earning a degree in Electromechanical Engineering. He then worked for several years in the construction industry. “I moved to the United States because my family had been here for many years, and I wanted to be close to them. When I arrived in this country, I had to start over from the beginning. My biggest barrier was learning the English language, but little by little, I’ve made progress,” stated Rubén.
A Path of Learning and Growth
Rubén worked in the Finishing department for a little over three months before deciding to take a position in the Fabrication department. The open position was for a laser operator on Felling’s weekend shift. “I worked as a laser machine operator for three years, then moved to a press brake operator for the next two years. “During these two years, I made the choice to go back to college to get my Mechanical Designer degree,” said Ruben. “So, I went to school during the week and worked on the weekends.” The weekend shift is a 3-day schedule (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) where employees work 36 hours and are paid for 40 hours.
After completing his schooling, Rubén accepted a position as a Designer with Felling’s Engineering team. Now, two years into his role as a Designer, Rubén utilizes his mechanical design knowledge to create trailer model drawings, as well as weldments, assemblies, and parts, using computer-aided design programs such as SolidWorks, Inventor, and AutoCAD.
“My motivation in moving from one department to another is the desire to continue learning how to do new things and take on new challenges. My family is also my motivation because everything I do is for them.”

When asked why he chose to work at Felling, Rubén said, “I chose Felling Trailers because it felt like a good company, and I have a strong interest in the manufacturing industry. I think I made the right choice, as it’s a growing company. The work environment is very good, and I have been fortunate to have had good coworkers in all the departments where I have worked. I am grateful for the opportunity the company gives us all to grow professionally and contribute to the company’s growth.”
Since joining Felling Trailers seven years ago, Rubén has seen the company grow in many ways, from improvements to the production areas with new equipment and facilities to the office space, too. “The company has grown a lot over the years. I have witnessed the construction of the new office building, the new (powder coat) painting building, and the acquisition of more work machines, such as the tube laser.”

Rubén comenzó su carrera en Felling Trailers en 2018, trabajando en el departamento de Acabado en el turno de noche. “Instalé la plataforma, las luces y los frenos en los remolques”, dijo Rubén. Al formar parte del equipo de Acabado/Montaje Final, Rubén aprendió el proceso de montaje final de muchos de los modelos de remolques que fabrica Felling. En el acabado, los ensambladores son el último paso en el proceso de construcción de un remolque, siguiendo las listas de verificación y los planos de ensamblaje. Aquí es donde un remolque recibe su cableado, iluminación, plataforma y accesorios atornillados.
Antes de unirse a Felling Trailers, Rubén trabajó en la industria agrícola, en una granja lechera. Hace poco más de una década, Rubén y su esposa se mudaron a Minnesota. Ruben es originario de México y completó toda su educación allí, obteniendo un título en Ingeniería Electromecánica. Luego trabajó durante varios años en la industria de la construcción. “Me mudé a los Estados Unidos porque mi familia había estado aquí durante muchos años y quería estar cerca de ellos. Cuando llegué a este país, tuve que empezar de nuevo desde el principio. Mi mayor barrera fue aprender el idioma inglés, pero poco a poco he ido progresando”, afirmó Rubén.
Un camino de aprendizaje y crecimiento
Rubén trabajó en el departamento de Acabados durante poco más de tres meses antes de decidir ocupar un puesto en el departamento de Fabricación. El puesto vacante era para un operador de láser en el turno de fin de semana de Felling. “Trabajé como operador de máquinas láser durante tres años, luego pasé a Operador de Prensas Plegadoras durante los siguientes dos años. ” Durante estos dos años, tomé la decisión de volver a la universidad para obtener mi título de Diseñador Mecánico”, dijo Rubén. “Así que iba a la escuela durante la semana y trabajaba los fines de semana”. El turno de fin de semana es un horario de 3 días (viernes, sábado y domingo) en el que los empleados trabajan 36 horas y se les paga por 40 horas.
Después de completar sus estudios, Rubén aceptó un puesto como Diseñador en el equipo de Ingeniería de Felling. Ahora, dos años después de su puesto como Diseñador, Rubén utiliza sus conocimientos de diseño mecánico para crear dibujos de modelos de remolques, así como soldaduras, ensamblajes y piezas, utilizando programas de diseño asistido por computadora como SolidWorks, Inventor y AutoCAD.

Cuando se le preguntó por qué eligió trabajar en Felling, Rubén dijo: “Elegí Felling Trailers porque me pareció una buena empresa y tengo un gran interés en la industria manufacturera. Creo que tomé la decisión correcta, ya que es una empresa en crecimiento. El ambiente de trabajo es muy bueno, y he tenido la suerte de haber tenido buenos compañeros de trabajo en todos los departamentos donde he trabajado. Estoy agradecido por la oportunidad que la compañía nos brinda a todos para crecer profesionalmente y contribuir al crecimiento de la compañía”.
Desde que se unió a Felling Trailers hace siete años, Rubén ha visto crecer a la empresa de muchas maneras, desde mejoras en las áreas de producción con nuevos equipos e instalaciones hasta el espacio de oficinas. “La empresa ha crecido mucho a lo largo de los años. He sido testigo de la construcción del nuevo edificio de oficinas, el nuevo edificio de pintura (con recubrimiento en polvo) y la adquisición de más máquinas de trabajo, como el láser de tubo”.
